We spent a month in Arugam Bay for the surf and beach time it promises. It didn’t really disappoint, and we stayed at a cute, comfortable, little house for the month we were there. We rented the house from a German girl named Anne, who has been here for years, and has carved out a really distinct living for herself in Arugam Bay. She is a sweet girl: very concerned about the well-being of the dogs and cats in the area, and, with her boyfriend Pasindu, has taken on a tough role as protector and amateur vet for all the local critters. She does an admirable and respectable job of providing all she can for them while working a regular job and keeping up two houses. The veterinary care here in Arugam Bay is very, very difficult, so she takes a lot of it on herself (an uphill battle here in Sri Lanka, to be sure).
The upshot of this is that she has now taken on seven dogs and three cats of her own. Most of them spent a good deal of time digging under the fence to spend time at our house. We loved them! Every one of them a distinct personality, but some stood out:

Miles.
This little bugger had near met his maker when we arrived, sick with Parvo virus and barely able to move. Thanks to Anne’s care, he recovered with a vengeance, becoming a dervish of teeth and mischief as he started feeling better.
He is such a cute little shit though.

He is the bane of the cat’s existence though: constantly attacking them with his sharp little puppy teeth.

And digging trenches to lay in and cool off. All the dogs did that all the time. I was constantly falling in, and refilling trenches and holes they had all excavated. It was actually kind of funny.

Especiallly this clown. She was one of my favorites (okay, my actual favorite). Speedy: Always the first one to escape her yard, waiting at our gate to be let in and hang out with us. She was constant comic relief. Here she fell in her own hole she had excavated. Love the look on her face!
And the cats.I have never really been a huge cat person, but these knuckleheads kinda won me over.

The black and white one, named Butter, was persistently over-affectionate, and always needed to be center of attention (generally desperate to be sitting on your lap, or computer, or dinner plate), but endearing nonetheless.
She was sweet, though, and brought us thoughtful and loving gifts every night.

Several nights I got out of bed and stepped on her not-so-little presents. Yuck.
We really did enjoy our time there, and having a constant assortment of furry friends to hang out with was a nice taste of having pets at home.
It made it a little more fun.
Hilarious!!!
